From São Tomé town I travelled on to Porto Alegre to stay at the Eco Lodge at Praia Inhame.
The drive is about 70km, and I negotiated with a taxi driver to take me there for 60€, honestly not sure if that is a good price or not, had to pay a bit additional as well for gas en-route. It took more than two hours though, and the driver (a friendly guy from Gabon) made some stops along the way to show me a couple of sights.
I had agreed with him to meet at Mercado Municipal to depart at 10am, as I rushed up to there arriving at 10:02 he was laughing at how early I was...
The drive from North to South takes no less than 2 hours, the roads are quite good for the first half of the journey, traffic is not fast though. |
The first stop shortly outside of the capital was Agua Izé, and the abandoned hospital of the town. Agua Izé was once home to one of the large plantations of the island.

Just near to Agua Izé is Boca do Inferno - São Tomé

Driving on the main road it is impossible to miss one of the most famous sights of the island of São Tomé, the Cao Grande Peak, a volcanic plug peak in the Obo National Park. |
