Flights:
There are many search engines for flights out there, it usually pays off to shop around a bit if one has time. My favourite resource however is Google Flights that gives quite dynamic search options and scans traditional airlines as well as low-cost brands:

I particularly like the map function that shows you destinations and prices from your choice of departure airport and date intervals, great for finding inspiration and potentially discover new destinations.



Safety:
Traveling solo requires a good sense of safety, in general the world is a wonderful place however there are areas where things are different from what one might be used to at home thus it is always a good idea to read up before visiting a new place. The UK government publishes travel advice for just about any country, information to be taken with a pinch of salt of course, make your own judgement but be aware of known risks:
