Cairo to Alexandria, day trip by train

While visiting Cairo in late 2018 I wanted to make a day trip to Alexandria to spend a few hours there taking in the sights and also eating some fresh fish.

While researching it seems there are four ways of making the trip that is not much longer than approx.. 200km:
1. Airplane - Costly and time consuming getting to and from the airports
2. Shared taxis (and also Uber at a rather low price) - Door to door, however most people seem to advise against this option due to the chaotic traffic on this route and the frequency of accidents.
3. Coach - The cheapest option, but shares the disadvantages of the taxi option.
4. Train - Reasonably priced, tickets in both 1st and 2nd class available on this route, and a few different options of trains with a few being quite fast and making the journey in around 3 hours.

I settled for the train option, and in hindsight I am happy about that choice, the journey was timely, safe, comfortable and offered really good value for money. Also had a chance to chat a bit with fellow passengers.

The journey might be a little long for a day trip for some, thus if one wants to relax and spend a bit longer time in Alexandria it might be a good idea to stay over night. It is however possible to make the journey over one day, reserving about 6-7 hours of time for travel, and  spending perhaps 5-7 hours in Alexandria to take in the major sights and enjoy a good lunch.

Below would be this train journey in November 2018 described in pictures with price references valid at the time of travel. Prices and train times are available through the website of the Egyptian railways however it seems at the time only to be possible to purchase the tickets through the ticket offices at the stations.

Kinmen - my favourite Island all time

One of my favourite destinations on this planet is not one that sees loads of travellers, that would maybe be one of the reasons that this is such a fantastic place to visit.
For many travellers Taiwan is not on the list of places to visit when traveling through Asia, but for those who do visit it tends to be one of the most memorable stays on their trip.
Out of those who visit Taiwan and also make it to the outlying island of Kinmen (金門, Jinmen) CONGRATULATIONS!

This island has it all, contemporary and old history, great people, great food, beautiful scenery, and great guesthouses.

During my visit to Kinmen I stayed at Luo Fun Jyu guesthouse a beautifully restored house in the village of Zhushan.
The owner, a man and his old father treat guests like VIPs with splendid service, and this is probably Most amazing B&B stay in Taiwan
We were picked up from the airport by the father of the owner "Laoye", a very friendly and helpful man, he spent a day taking me and my friend around for sightseeing free of charge.
During the stay we were treated to tea and drinks in the evening. Laoye was also taking orders for what breakfast we wanted the following day (then order it from the breakfast shop). Rooms are excellent, and fantastic value for money.
Below would be some impressions of what there is to see on this Island.
First of all, the guesthouse is a sight in itself:

Around the main town of Jincheng one of the landmarks of the island is Juguang tower (莒光樓) a pretty romantic location, from here one can also enjoy a very pretty sunset from the balcony looking out over the island and the ocean.

A short ride away from the town is Ci lake, (慈湖)with a dedicted sunset viewing spot.

One of the most famous and successful singers from the mandarin speaking world is Theresa Teng, (鄧麗君)loved by generations. During the height of the war her songs were played at the Beishan broadcasting station in Kinmen (48 loudspeakers) just 2 kms away from Xiamen city aiming towards the Chinese mainland with songs like Tian Mi Mi. At one point the star herself visited the Island and went to speak through the broadcasting station to the troops stationed on Kinmen.
Today Kinmen hosts a museum dedicated to her and her time on the Island.

Traveling around the Island (there are actually two islands making up Kinmen county) there are loads of sights both reminding of contemporary tensions (formally battle ended in the 1980s) but also much older sights, the island has been inhabited since the Tang dynasty.

Jericho, 10,000 years old but still cool

The city of Jericho “City of Palms” is said to be one of the oldest cities in the world with a history traced back in history for 10,000 years. Most people know the city through the battle of Jericho (Biblical reference). Alongside with Bethlehem this could arguably be one of the must do day trips for visitors to Jerusalem.

From Jerusalem the city can be reach from the Arab bus station, although you may be dropped at the main road and would have to take a shared taxi for the last part of the journey into the town. While visiting Jericho I got off the bus while travelling back from the dead sea (direction Jerusalem). As there were more people getting off the bus at the main road we split the price for a shared taxi into town.

During my trip to Jericho I stayed at the “Auberg-Inn” guesthouse that has rooms/beds in various categories and also includes a great breakfast. The guesthouse is to a big extend being run and maintained by volunteers coming to stay there and has a number of domestic animals and a big garden. It is walking distance from many areas of the town and we were walking also at night to get back to the guesthouse, quite dark but felt safe at all times.

In the town centre there are also a number of restaurants, around the central square. Most restaurants do not serve alcohol however beer and wine is sold in a few shops (where it can also be consumed or taken back to the hotel) for those who do not want to give up drinking during a stay in Jericho. Worth to mention though is that there are some locally brewed beers that are cheaper (and arguably better) than the imported brands.

Main sights in Jericho apart from town and local town life itself are mostly of archaeological nature, Mountain of temptation (accessible by a cable car), Tell es-Sultan being the sight where ancient Jericho is being uncovered, tomb of Moses and many others. Around the area are also a number of monasteries. Some of these sights are already arranged and organised for tourists, but there are also a number of sights that are not yet fully prepared for tourism although still possible to visit (such as Herod’s palace to name one).

Below would be some pictures capturing a one day walk around Jericho and a stay at the Auberg-Inn guest house (aka House of Eggplants) during a warm summer day:

The one and only National Park of Portugal – Peneda Gerês

In North Eastern Portugal, bordering Spain is not only the largest National Park of Portugal, it is officially also the only… Located only a one-hour drive from the tourism magnet of Porto this is a great one or two day trip on any visit to Portugal, and it is also free of charge.

Worth to note is that this area is quite rainy in winter, and there might also be snow. However, my opinion is that going in low season, and during days with “bad” weather can be a bliss as one may experience the majestic landscape feeling like a VIP on a private tour without the crowds covering the views.

The area is great for hikes, and it is also possible to drive between different areas, the roads are quite small and curvy though so exercise caution if driving.

Apart from the marvellous natural landscape around the area, there are also some very pretty villages where traditional Portuguese village life is still maintained.

Kamakura, a walk around temples and gardens

Kamakura is famous for its many temples, gardens, the beach as well as Great Buddha of Kotokuin. Being located only 60km away from Tokyo it is a common day trip from the capital, there are however a number of hotels and good restaurants making it a good destination to easily escape the hustle and bustle of one of the largest cities on the planet.

Spending a day in early spring walking around (mostly walking but also making use of the light railway that serves Kamakura and Enoshima, see details below), near to Kamakura is also the Odawara castle well worth a visit.

Below would be an outline of a good itinerary for a sunny day in Kamakura.

Hasedera (長谷) – a temple with a fantastic garden, home to the largest Kannon wooden statue in the Country, but also offering a great view over the city and the sea from its observation desk.

Kamakura is a very walking friendly city, the historical sites are no longer than 30min walk between them and traffic is organised and slow. There is however the Enoden line serving Kamakura with a number of stations en-route to Enoshima.
